Boca Grande & Placida

Boca Grande sits at the tip of Gasparilla Island on Florida's Gulf Coast, reached by a single toll causeway from the mainland village of Placida. It is a slow, golf-cart town of banyan-shaded lanes, a historic 1890 lighthouse, and some of the finest tarpon fishing in the world — a quiet counterpoint to the busier beaches farther south.

Where Boca Grande is and how you get there

Boca Grande occupies the southern end of Gasparilla Island, off the coast of Charlotte and Lee counties. There is one way on and off by car: the Boca Grande Causeway from Placida, which charges a toll per vehicle. Once you are on the island most people leave the car parked and move by golf cart or bicycle — the town is compact and the Boca Grande Bike Path runs the length of the island along the old railroad bed.

Things to do with the family

Gasparilla Island State Park anchors the south end, where the restored Port Boca Grande Lighthouse houses a small maritime museum and a calm swimming beach faces the pass. Shelling is excellent, especially in winter. Families bike the paved path, browse the shops and ice-cream stops along the historic downtown, and watch for manatees and dolphins in the harbor. In late spring the flats off the island fill with tarpon, and licensed charter captains take families out to watch or fish.

Winter through spring (December to April) is the dry, mild high season — warm days, low humidity, the best shelling, and the busiest calendar. Tarpon season peaks roughly May and June. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms and is also the quietest and most affordable stretch; hurricane season officially runs June through November, so travelers in those months should watch forecasts and consider flexible booking.

Boca Grande rewards families who want calm over crowds — lighthouse beaches, easy biking, and unhurried days rather than boardwalk attractions and nightlife. The mainland side around Placida and Cape Haze adds boat ramps, marinas, and dining without the causeway toll, which makes a nearby stay a practical base for exploring the whole area.
